Best breed for meat yield
« on: January 04, 2011, 11:57:02 am »
Hi all,
Its coming to the time of year again when we are planning to keep some pigs!! having succesfully reared ( and nearly eaten) 7 GOS x saddlebacks  :yum: anyway just wondering what sort of breed to try this year, and trying to getting a good high meat yield from them.

cheers for now

Hi WP
The rare/traditional breeds will all give more or less the same amount of meat @ 85Kg liveweight, you could run them on to 100-120Kg (providing your abbetoir takes carcasses that size) good feed management should ensure they're not over fat. What you got from your crosses is probably about what you'd get from most of the breeds 'a good high meat yeild' sounds more like stepping foot into some of the more commercial strains - large white, pietrain, duroc, but these aren't always suited to more simple, outdoor systems :-\ Stick with the rare breeds and just get more of 'em  ;)  ;D :pig: ;D :pig: ;D :pig:
