Excellent thanks - looks like loads of useful information - going to download some later when I manage to get my computer back from the kids.
Now off to try and store rather a lot of mangels that I have grown for animal food - don't want the rats to get them...

Glad they were of interest Nicki,
as for the mangels...how are you going to store them ? as I am growing some as a trial for next year and I was wondering how best to store them till after christmas , which is when they reckon you should keep them till , so that the sugars form properly I think ?

cheers

Hi Rusty

We have just stored them in a barn and stacked them on the floor as we read somewhere that you could do that, or put their leaves on them but then I think that may make them too soggy, thus rot could set in.  We are a bit worried about the rats mind - just hope the cats work hard!  Yes I have read that as well not to feed them until after new year as there is some poison in them and def not to feed the animals leaves, other than that they are supposed to be excellent for increasing milk production in cows, and good for pigs and sheep and for making wine - all in all very versatile.
It is the first time I have grown them so it is a learning curve at the moment.  I have also grown masses of soya plants as protein supposed to be very good for pigs but having not had much sunshine they have not really produced much.  Never mind there is always next year ...

hello ,
the above link takes you to a collection of pdf books covering some very handy subjects . Once again I am sure there will be something for everyone there. It costs nothing to get the pdf's just follow the instructions, choose the book you want ,click on it, put in your name and email address in the windows and then in the next window, click on the 'do not join button'  . A link will then be sent to your email address, click on that link and you will get the pdf . All you need to do then , is save it in whatever folder you wish on your hard drive. It is much simpler than it sounds .
I think you will like some of the books on this link too Stephen , similar sorts of things , but winter on it's way ..plenty of long nights to do some reading eh?
    Thanks Nicki,
let us know how well they store , I had thought of storing them in a shed with some straw on top, but like you I am woried about rats, ( I really hate the little buggers). The leaves should make plenty of compost though , so nothing wasted.  Comfrey has a very good protein content , so could well be added to animal feed , they also produce huge amounts . I have been getting 2lb-3lb per plant, per cut , and I got 5 cuts this year. So well worth thinking about.

cheers

Russ

Loads more books on this link , another section of the last actually . But on this one there is Lawrence D Hills book on Comfrey . A really fantastic book, with all you need to know about growing it, and all it's uses.

I couldn't add this to the last message as my pc is playing up and wouldn't allow me to modify...
