From Down under
« on: September 01, 2010, 01:34:20 pm »
My name is John Daley, I have had a 20 acre block in the forest outside of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia for many years, the drought we have had has caused havoc but now I am catching up many years of back log now the ground is moist.
I am into self suffiecency if possible and I have found its hard work.
Now I know why real farmers get a job, to pay the bills.
My average rainfall is about 450mm a year but for the last 12 I have had between 100mm and 250mm, so its a bit dryer than usual.

I also ride motorcycles, race sidecars, build hots rods and build up my house and activities from the rubbish dump and road side collections.

I am currently planting out an orchard, fixing chook [ chicken ] yards and considering pig pens.
I have had a good run with trout and yellow fin fish, prior to the drought in my dams so I am trying again, and my small wine vineyard died, now I am trying table grapes.
I  keep bees and because we have feral rabbits the vege patch looks like Fort Knox.

What problems can you have with weather?
Too much of it?
We can go 10 years with no rain in parts here.

Hi and welcome from North Yorkshire.  My sister lives in Adelaide.  I do like to visit when I can and have loved my trips over there.  Quite tricky now I have all my animals as I have to find willing animal sitters.  :goat: :sheep: :chook: :cat: :dog:

Hello and welcome from Worcestershire  :)

my hubby was on a working holiday from Sydney when he met me - poor thing is stuck in the UK now (rain and all!!)

Have to ask - what are table grapes? sounds intriguing!

My wobble board is near the fridge.
Table grapes are grapes grown for eating rather than wine making.
Gem, pig shooting, hunting coppers sound like trouble - go to South Africa you will fit in there and not be noticed.
The pig shooting, buck jumpinng and boozing is not really big in the cosmopolitan civilised southern part of Australia.
Mid New South Wales is probally a place to look at, is isolated, the coppers are bent, the weather is dry and hot land may not be cheap but it is not very fertile.
Coonabarraban, Wagga Wagga, Deniliquin, Cobar, Broken Hill are places to look at.
