Possible foot rot?
« on: June 04, 2018, 01:05:29 pm »
One of my ewes is slightly lame again. She does have a habit of going lame. I've had the vet to her when she was very lame and he couldn't find any thing wrong.I caught her up yesterday and had a good look at her feet. Nothing looks like foot rot as I've seen in books but her feet did smell a bit unpleasant.I'm going to foot bathe with zinc sulphate and give her an antibiotic injection, using L.A. Alamycin. Would one injection be sufficient or should I give her a course over several days? Thank you.

If you read the label it probably says that 1 injection will last 72hr ? smells unpleasant is all relative but if you are sure nothing obvious even under the horn ? no heat ?

Nothing obvious, Shep.No heat. But as she walks she keeps lifting her foot as if it hurts. Will check on the leaflet for timing. Thanks for your reply.

Could be arthritis in one of her joints since she keeps going lame ,I know what that feels like :(

Yes, that's another possibility, Shep. Sorry to hear you know all about it!

If it smells then scauld or stinks then foot rot.   A jab alomycin LA is enough.   Make sure you are not looking at compacted mud on base of hoof thinking it's foot ..... Can hide multitude of things!

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

Let go of who you are and become who you are meant to be.

Thanks BIW. I did clean her feet to get rid of mud etc and they still smelt, but I wouldn't say they stank! So I I'll keep an eye on her and hope things improve with the Alamycin.
