Regrassing Chicken Area
« on: April 16, 2018, 01:21:43 pm »
What was a grassed orchard has been reduced to a brown mudbath over the winder by my chickens. Whilst I can see some grass shoots appearing my hunch is that I will need to reseed to get it to come back properly with the chx kept off of it whilst it rejuvenates. ANy comments/advice greatfully received

Thanks
Steve

If you had just a few chickens on quite a large area I'd wait until the grass gets going and see just how much is still bare ground before you spend time and money on overseeding.  Established grass is surprisingly robust, although you may need to weed out opportunistic weeds like nettles, docks and thistles that may take advantage of a comparative lack of ground cover.

I'd wait too, we levelled half our garden, it was bare earth and stones after the machines finished. Got as far as picking the stones off, never got round to reseeding and the whole thing greened up in the spring. Fingers crossed! Otherwise, my friend Alison at grassseeddirrect will sort you out with best varieties
