Very sick lamb
« on: April 07, 2018, 04:16:31 pm »
Hey guys I’m looking after a very poorly week old lamb. She had scours from the start I did give her a electrolyte drink and yoghurt she did great. Then she went down hill very fast. She is on day 2 of antibiotics and she is swallowing food. But she is completely exhausted she can lift her head only just . So the scouring has stopped finally but she is so week is there any chance a lamb this far gone can recover? I’ve been feeding her every 2 hours is that enough or should I do more? Never done this before I’m not sure if she has a chance or not :( please any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

Coccidiosis?  They can go downhill very quickly with cocci and presumably that's what your vet prescribed antibiotics for.  Anything you can do to ease the environmental burden will help.  Is she on clean bedding in a draught-free place, under an infra red lamp or near a radiator, or in a jacket?  That way she won't have to use energy to keep warm.

Bit young for cocci? The scour could be due to too much milk, milk the wrong strength or temperature. I’d give the vet a ring personally if it’s not responding to antibiotics

If the scouring has stopped then its progress , and yes little and often feeds speak to your vet about more electrolytes to put back lost salts/vits and as said keep warm at all times . Always hope
