are these poisiouns to livestock as is potato plants?
my father in law was saying they are from the same family, dont know if he was joking!
is this true?

Yes potatoes and tomatoes are from the same family.  After they have flowered, some potatoes have small round green fruit, just like tomatoes - poisonous.  Some of my Soay lambs have been eating potato plants so I hope they are not too poisonous..... :(
