What right have they what right have I
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:42:38 am »
Good moaning;   over here (France) the bull calves from embryos from cloned cows going into the meat chain is big news.  I heard on Radio 4 the minister for whatever playing it down, saying the  meat is safe for human consumption.  Whether or not this is correct, I am astonished that "they" have decided for "me" that this can be introduced into the food chain without any prior notice.  The very least all products from this source should be labelled as from cloned cows.  I believe I should have the right to choose whether or not I eat meat from cloned cows, or for that matter from any gm sources.

from the research I have been doing on this 'cloning' and 'gm' are 2 entirely different things. Within the cloning they do not genetically modify anything they actually clone the other animal exactly which makes the 2 animals like twins.
In the US they have been allowing this meat and milk into the food chain for a while without consumer knowledge.

Exactly, but what right do "they" have to impose this on "me/us".  My understanding is that line breeding is frowned upon beyond one generation, cloning is a far more dramatic version of line/in-breeding.

I need a jumping up and down with frustration and smoke coming out of my ears smiley

I think this sort of happening is why more and more people are growing their own, meat as well as veg. and fruit!

Am I being thick here?  Apart from the lack of courtesy in not being told it is from a cloned grandparent, what hazard is there for me if I eat that meat?

You're probably correct, there is probably no direct hazard, but it is a failure of the meat traceability system - you should know where your meat comes from.  You could then make your own choice.

Yes, I agree with that entirely, but I doubt if the farmer is at fault all on his own, if at all.  And it seems to me he might be made a scapegoat?

From what I have read, the poor farmer tried to establish before he got the bull, if it would be a problem for any offspring to go into the food chain or into milk production. And he was told, no it wouldn't. So I don't think its his fault, he tried to make certain even before he got it!
