Hi from Llandysul
« on: July 23, 2010, 05:57:29 pm »
Hello from the wilds of south Wales

We've got a small smallholding ( about 3/4 of an acre ) currently filled with chickens, veg and 2 completely mental geese.  We're hoping to start breeding rabbits for the table soon.

Wish us luck!

Hi and welcome from the Scottish Borders. Would like a couple of geese, are they always mental?

No, my parents used to keep geese in the sixties, and regularly lost them to foxes.  It's quite true that a noisy gander will intimidate a fox, and make a lot of noise, but they have no defence if the fox grabs them by the neck.

Well John I was kinda wary, Fox is a pretty clever beast, I'm 6ft all round my garden so it would need to be in a pretty bad way to try negotiate that.

About the geese :  There more like naughty little boys!  They break into the shed, mess the straw up, cover the floor in straw, newspaper and droppings, steal cardboard boxes and pull over bits of wood then stand in the middle of all the carnage with a look on their faces that says 'What?  It was like this when we got here!'  For the most part their really sweet little things.  Dinky's a brecon about 3 months old and Dylan is a brecon/embden cross and about 6 months.
