Appearance of a pig worm
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:36:35 am »

I have a worming programme in place which I adhere to and have never had any problems with worms.

I bought in some youngstock this week, isolated them and wormed with Ivomec.  Now four days on, and just about to move them to new grazing I noticed one ejecting a long pinkish worm  - just the worm.  I think it was dead although the pig would not allow me to get close enough to make sure.

I have never seen any of my stock producing worms before.  So can anyone please advise me, is this the Ivomec working or do I need to worm the whole bunch again with a different wormer?  Although the breeder assured me they had been wormed a week before I took delivery, I am unsure that this was the case.

I am checking the pig poo for worms although not seen any more.

I would say that this is the Ivomec working. Did they look a bit pot-bellied before you dosed them?

Thanks for the help, have never had this before.  It was only in the newly acquired stock.  Since my panic post have not seen any more worms, despite long and close encounters with a lot of pig effluent.  Thank God we dont have close neighbours they would have been sending for the men in white coats.

Yep agree.

Suspect that you have not seen this before as you do not have a worm problem.

A wormer will kill any worms present.  These will include some that you won't see, but the long ones in the gut if present will come out.  Typically they look like spagetti.  They come out BECAUSE they are dead, so stop hanging onto the inside of the gut, so no chance that a worm will be alive.  They shed eggs in the dung of the pig to multiply, they don;t come out live to find another host.

A wormer is not a preventative, it simply kills any infectation present.

So that is what you saw, which is telling you that you were right to worm them, so rather than panic give yourself a good pat on the back.

update - I arranged for a friend who had also bought some of this stock to have hers done as well - she emailed me this morning to say she had had to clear her paddock 6 times.

Oh I do feel better knowing they are dead.  Many thanks for the help.

Did you inject the pigs or add the Ivomec to the feed?

They were injected.  I understand there is something similar (here anyway) that you can add to the water, but would have been concerned that they didnt all get the right amount, and that some of them may have just sat in it.
