This is great news for animal welfare. Hopefully it will be extended to Scotland and Wales soon too  .

.... and it will force even more of the smaller slaughterhouses to close.... meaning longer journeys for livestock and even less possibilities for the smaller scale livestock keeper . Great news indeed!

How does that follow?

I would be more concerned that they intend to update the Statutory Animal Welfare Codes for all animals, farm and pets. That has the potential to do good but in reality has the potential to be drawn up by people who think they know best without having any common sense or understanding about animals at all.

It will increase costs for slaughterhouses. Their best bet would be as few cameras as possible with no audio recording capabilities. The cameras wont cost that much the big cost will be storage of footage. The bigger the area means more cameras  more cameras means more data to be stored.

It will be good to make sure animals are treated well.

It will be a cost for those slaughterhouses who don't already have CCTV. Many have it anyway. Once installed and it doesn't have to cost a fortune, the ongoing costs are minimal are they not? So, I don't see it as a make or break for small abattoirs.

During the summer here a local hall is taken over and becomes a vintage shop. They set up CCTV during that time for security purposes and it apparently doesn't cost much.
