http://www.netpcdirect.co.uk/mobile-phone-gadgets/sim_master.htmlthat is just one of the many different gadgets that allow you to upload information to your pc from your phone sim card. It is handy in that all you need do is slip in the sim card and upload all contact numbers etc and any sms messages you want to save , to your pc hard drive. It isn't much more complicated than entering information on a forum such as this , ie when you want to post a reply etc . All very straight forward and usually clear instructions are available with the unit.
Most mobile phones that I have had also allow this information to be uploaded via an RS232 cable (these you normally have to purchase for your particular phone !! ) .(This is a slightly out of date way of doing it now , and your phone may not have this facility) , it may offer the use of a usb connection cable ? . Software supplied with the phone on cd or dvd , will then make it a simple job to upload all your info , or even with more modern smartphones etc , things such as films , audio books etc . The later depends on the memory available on your particular mobile .
All this sounds very complicated and techy ... but in reality it is a very simple operation , much like uploading a picture to photobucket or flicker or even just to your pc , from your mobile phone camera or from a digital camera proper.
The slightly more modern mobiles also offer the use of bluetooth to upload information as well as downloading too your phone from the pc . The software to do this is usually on the cd/dvd once again , that came with the phone . If you don't get such a cd/dvd , then you can normally go to the website of the particular mobile and download the software from there .
The software usually, but not always ,self loads when you put the cd/dvd in the pc . Then if you are using an R232 cable , you go in manually to the appropriate program file and upload/download the information you want. If you have bluetooth though , the phone will mainly do all this on it's own , after the initial loading and setup of the software. It is then called synchronization , or some such similar phrase.
Most of this sort of stuff is more or less plug and play , ie you plug it in and it is recognized by the pc , and does more or less everything for you .
Failing all that , do as you have done already , and write the contact details down in a phone book

aaaahhhhh the good ole days eh ? pen and paper.
cheers
