Sheep hoof issue
« on: July 29, 2017, 10:42:10 am »
New to this so be gentle with me ha
One of my sheep limping , he walks in it but when running holds it up
I got closer enough today to inspect hoof further
I noticed a small snaggy bit of hoof sticking of the outside of his hoof
Its not deep seems like a very thin layer of hoof and not all the way up the hoof or anything
I cleaned and sprayed it with purple spray
Should I try and cut the snaggy bits of ?
Could it be this causing my sheep to be uncomfortable ?
He's eating and getting around and a pain to catch but can poss trim it if whilst he's eating as he's a foody and won't pass on his sheep nuts for owt
Please advice needed

A photo would be very helpful
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Tracey is there no local farmers or smallholders near you who could give you some help and confidence with her sheep?  Where are you?
Linda

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

I've seen an improvement in my ewes' feet since using the mole valley buckets. The zinc and biotin will strengthen the hoof. If there are flaps of hoof wall hanging off I would trim them carefully. Treatment for shelley hoof (where the hoof wall separates from the horn giving a pocket for mud and dirt to get trapped into) is either trimming the hoof so the pocket is trimmed away, or I have seen hoof putty used to fill said pocket to stop mud getting trapped. For severe shelley hoof I'm not sure trimming the wall away is beneficial as it will take so long to grow back- hoof putty would be better used for severe shelley hoof I think.

This is really helpful http://beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/BRP-Reducing-lameness-manual-7-080316.pdf

would be wary of hoof putty only because having used it with horses you can get germs trapped under it.

Just search Keratex Hoof putty. Be sure to make the cavity you are filling as clean and dry as possible and really work the putty into a warm soft pliable substance before putting it in, small bits at a time to fill the whole cavity.
