Sheep with deep cut to the lip.
« on: June 11, 2017, 09:47:35 am »
I went out this morning to feed one of my sheep and its got a very deep cut to the side of the lip/mouth.  I'll post some pictures.   She is fed corn every day and some hay, should i stop feeding her that in case it gets infected.
Can anyone suggest something to help stop infection, we usually use a anti bacterial spray but with it being on the mouth i don't know if it would harm her.

Thank you.

Were it a clean fresh cut you could carefully superglue it (emergency wound closure is what superglue was originally developed for).  However, although I can't get a clear view, it looks more like a tear, or burst abscess.  You can use blue spray near the mouth - doesn't taste so good, but not harmful.  I would probably also use a long acting antibiotic - because it looks dirty, so there is a definite possibility of infection particularly as it's round the mouth.
If you are unsure, ask your vet's advice.

I'd be inclined to at least phone the vet on this - it's quite a big wound and in a place which will be constantly moved as she eats, drinks and cuds.

Thanks for the replies, we will phone the vet and ask them for advice and best medication.  Hopefully we can keep the infection away but i guess it will take along time to heal with it moving all the time when shes eating and getting wet when she drinks.

Thank you.

I meant to ask if you know how she acquired the injury.  Do you have barbed wire where she could injure herself on it?   (We removed all barbed wire when we first came here - all it does is injure animals and sometimes people)
