Feeding pigs whey?
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:16:20 pm »
Can I do this? One of my partners clients has a dairy goat farm and has offered us the whey to feed to our pigs (once they arrive!!)

Is it okay to do this as I know the rules about kitchen waste are funny.

Could we potentially still sell the carcasses to our local butcher if fed on whey or is this a no no?! :pig:

Yes you can feed whey from another farm, but need to follow the rules.

this link gives fairly good guidance

http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/farmanimal/movements/pigs/documents/new_owner_guide.pdf

You would have to register, follow the link below (soap box mode on) to read an amazing amount of red tape that seems to explain the size the national debt alone in its pointlessness for anything but a 1000 sow unit, but hey - defra are making sure we all live a homogenous risk free boring life of paperwork filling to ensure we all make it to very old age in total poverty (soap box mode off)

Have fun !

Haven't had chance to look yet as at work but does this apply even if the meat is only for personal consumption?!

Whatever happens dont feed them whey beyond 16 weeks as after this they pile on the fat. :farmer:

Short answer - yes !!  Regulations are made to be simple to administer by those who make them, not to make any logical sense to both large and small producer !
