Electric fence advice

Hello everyone.

I'm looking for some electric fence advice. I think I have pretty much all the kit I need to rig up my electric fence, i.e. energiser, battery, wire, posts, earth rod, etc. What I don't have is a reel to keep the rest of the wire that I'm not using and to get tension in the fence. Is a reel essential to get tension in the fence or could I use something makeshift in the meantime that would hold my couple of hundred extra metres of wire? I'm miles away from my agricultural store and don't have time to wait on an internet order.

It'd be great to hear any suggestions.

Easiest thing would be to just cut off the extra 200 metres !

You can always tie it together again if you need longer in future.

Otherwise just loop the excess and hang it either from or between two fencing stakes.  Wrap the last bit of the wire you are using round the fence post to get tension  - in essence as long as the wire doesn't touch the ground you are ok.
