Ilfor Williams P6 trailer question
« on: November 13, 2016, 06:25:50 pm »
A friend is selling one of these P6 stock trailers.  The internal dimensions are 6' x 4' (or 1.8m x 1.23m in new money).

How many shetland sheep will fit in one of these??

We had 8 to 10 shetland ewes in ours, depends a bit on how thick their fleeces are and ages/size.

This question came up about a year ago, and this information (worked out by someone else) was so useful to apply to my Castlemilk Moorits, that I kept it.

Sheep transportation
For info, the defra welfare guidelines state how much square area sheep should have during transportation.  --> scroll down to link to doc on welfare guidance on transporting sheep.
Shorn sheep or lambs over 26kg and below 55kg need 0.2-0.3 sq metres each.
Unshorn sheep under 55kg need 0.3-0.4 sq metres
Heavily pregnant sheep under 55kg need 0.4-0.5 sq metres.
P6e is 1.98mx1.21m = 2.4 sq metres, so that's 8-12 shorn sheep, or 6-8 unshorn sheep, or 4-6 pregnant sheep.
