We have just bought a paddock, which contains a very old pear tree (it has a very thick trunk). It's been badly damaged by wind recently, but still growing vigorously and producing hundreds of tiny pears, on both old and new growth. I am wondering if it might be a perry pear and worth making perry from - how would I be able to tell? The paddock belonged to a farm which has been here for a couple of hundred years and is close to the old farmhouse, which is what makes me think it may have been planted deliberately as part of a long vanished orchard. Of am I just imagining this and it's the equivalent of a crab apple tree? I can just see all this fruit and being a WI person I don't like to see it go to waste!
