Concentrates
« on: May 12, 2010, 10:49:29 am »
I am not sure how much concentrate (organic barley/maize/wheat/soya) kids are supposed to have.  I put out 1 scoop twice a day which is about 1.3 kg and now that the kids are a month old, they are eating it too - so I don't want to be underfeeding the mums!  They finish it off and then ask for more which they didn't do before.

I thought of feeding the mums higher up and the kids in a low feeder - but the mums just barge around anywhere, so that plan failed...

I was told to feed 500g per goat per day.  I'm not milking them, they are still feeding the kids.  they have plenty of grass and hay too - although you wouldn't think so sometimes, the amount of noise they make!

Hmmm - no-one got any gems to share?  I wonder if I need to give them any concentrate if they are having grass and hay - although they do certainly love it!

hope this helps,
i have two goats both 11mths old, a sannan and a toggenburg crossed.
i was feeding them to much concentrates along with the hay.
i cant exactly remember how much in pounds i was giving to them, what i thought was a nice bit was to much
im told on ere.
(hope im making sense)
i was told to cut down on the dry mix which i have.
they get about a cup full twice a day now, morning and evening.
i was told also too to mix it up with kwickbeet which soaks in water for 10min bulks up the feed in which they think they are eating loads ;)
i think it is also high in fibre(i only think so)
mine love the dry mix food and now molly has a problem with her udder which some of us on ere are relating it to too much
concentrates.
so now i make sure they are getting loads of hay during the day time.
hope this helps you.

I would think that with hay/grass and not milking them 500g concentrate should be enough (in two meals), just watch if they get a lot thinner (spine sticks out more), and increase then. I would feed the nannies separate from the kids, I have started to give mine a tiny bit of concentrates in a separate bucket, although they sometimes manage grab a wee bit of mum's (they are too quick now at 7 weeks old). Kids are now also eating hay and feed on mum during the day.
