Shearer needed- North Yorkshire
« on: June 22, 2016, 02:59:47 pm »
I am not sure how I managed to land this post in "Introduce yourself" instead of "Sheep". Hey ho, try again!

Having been let down at short notice, I am in urgent need of a shearer for 5 Ryelands in North Yorkshire (near Helmsley).
Does anyone know of anyone who does small numbers in this area?

OK, I guess not.
Plan B could be to try and do them myself.
Do these seem too good to be true? https://www.vidaxl.co.uk/p/250195/sheep-shears?gclid=CNCY4fvHvc0CFUiVaAod6aQD1w

I bought some off eBay called Sure Clip. Similar price but comes with two sets of blades and they also sell spares for them which most of the other cheap ones don't. I also had the 12v option with it so can run them off a car battery.
I've shorn around 30 sheep and two Alpacas with them and they have been great.

The sellers are farmers themselves.

Can't do the link thing but shouldn't take much searching.

Ps. Rylands are a pig to shear as the only place with no wool is the tips of ears and nose!! Patience required.

I got some similar. Haven't used them yet so can't comment. I'm getting a day of "training" in shearing from a lovely old shepherd, possibly today.

I have the same problem finding someone to shear a small number, especially as I don't have mains electric at the field. There was someone advertising on premises though who was based near York.

Hopefully sorted now as I have managed to track down the guy who did them last year, but then moved out of the area (maybe just after the trauma of shearing Ryelands!!!)
Still think that I might have a look at some shears though. I'll look at the Sure Clip ones as I'd prefer something someone's recommendation.

Ok, I'm going to take the plunge.
Can anyone advose if the blade supplied is OK to shear 7 Ryelands, or if i'd need to buy additional blades?
Anything else i need to know before i click "order"?
