Refurbishing a henhouse.
« on: June 07, 2016, 03:51:24 pm »
I have been given an elderly Henhouse and it needs the residential part re-roofing.  I wonder if there is such a thing as a waterproof plywood marine ply or the like.

Marine ply is very expensive. We use exterior ply; tack 1" x2" treated lath timber around the outside and nail felt over it. Using ply there are no gaps for red mite to get under the felt. The disadvantage is it is prone to condensation and mould growth, so we prime and paint white gloss.

Speaking of red mite - assume it has the wee devils, even if there have been no hens in for a while.  Give it a really thorough dose of Creosote plus anything else you can think of, and watch your hens carefully once they're in  :chook: :chook: :chook:

Sorry but I hate the stuff.  In a big wind it just shreds and flies off into the distance.  We have settled for the kind of roofing felt you use an adhesive with.  Before we found that, we covered unstuck stuff with tensioned, fine chicken wire, which works ok too.  We also cover the outside of the windows with chicken wire so they don't blow out.

Can be.  These past few weeks it's been very meek and sunny - must be building up to something  :o
