A bit off their food?
« on: April 28, 2016, 10:51:28 am »
4 more pigs arrived on Sunday - these are 15 weeks old and look lovely pigs.
They have been kept in a stable with their litter mates and fed on pig food as well as brewers mash.
All very lively when we put them into their pen (outside, about 10m x 10m - not had pigs on it for about 12 months)
Yesterday evening one of them did not come for food. She stayed in the ark - not lying down and we managed to persuade her out for a bit of a drink but then she went bak.
This morning, the one who had not eaten yesterday came racing out for food and looks fine.
however another one is exhibiting the same behaviour now.
We are feeding on sow and weaner pellets (no mash as we don't have it)
In hindsight, we should have brought some of the mash home with us when we picked them up but never thought to be honest.
none of the pigs are showing any sign of illness - no coughing, temperature.
Do you think this is down to change of food / environment or is there something else that we should be looking at.
Thankyou

It can often take pigs a few days to settle into a new environment.  Keep an eye on them but from a distance - a "new" human being hanging around is yet another stress factor for them.  Main thing to look out for is penumonia (runny nose, laboured breathing) which is generally the first thing a stressed pig will succumb to.  Vet and a/bs straight away if you see this - they can go downhill very quickly.

Thank you - especially for the comment about the "new human" - I had not thought of that.
appreciate your advice
