I just fancied a bacon and egg sandwich for dinner so nipped to my local shop for some bacon(hope to rear my own one day), as I was wrapping the left overs i noticed the lable said 87% pork! Whats all the rest made up of?

Alsorts of chemicals chriso nitrites and salt and wet cure thats why the pan ends up with a layer of white (SNOT) in when you have finished instead of that lovely fat that yer mam fried the tatties in Of course you can pay half as much again in some shops and have proper dry cured then the white stuff isn't there

I think it's a bit cheeky cos i'm sure i paid the full weight at pork price.

It's not what I want, but then I maybe a wife but no housewife .  Unfortunately it's what the majority of customers want.  They want no fat, easy to make food, low cost food that they don't have to chew.  Finding out the hard way, everyone wants my free range eggs but they don't want to pay for them (BTW I am only asking the same price as caged eggs).

Oh so true.  Annie didnt you know that your hens freely DONATE their eggs to you, ergo, you should give them away free.  After all its your hobby not your living like Tesco.

Hi all, I think what is upsetting me I am wasting so many eggs, as we can only eat a certain amount.  When they were pullet eggs I gave the excess away to my Sister and brother in law.  Them I don't mind as they have helped us out,  that's right HM it is just a hobby .  Anyway have decided for now to breed my chickens and sell the off spring will make a better living and only keep enough animals to feed us.  Also OH and I will both work at out side employment.  Dave my chickens don't actually cost that much, all I need to do is sell two dozen eggs and they are paid for.  I may have to start selling my eggs at the local farmers markets, which we intend on doing but it's just all the rules and regs.  To sell to family and friends here it's allowed without having to fill out forms and there are enough to sell to and make a little profit so that our eggs are free.  Wizard I don't mind that as HM was actually sticking up for me.

Hello Anne-Marie I hope Richard and the children are fine and well It's spring time here in Scartho my silly early spuds have gone daft in their boxes a foot tall they are.All we need is a mid May frost (I don't think) and they will all be spoiled.I have lots of young tomato seedlings Gardeners Delight and cherry hanging ones various Red AND Yellow I like to grow G D they are so useful tasty fresh marvelous bottled and cooked in the pressure cooker and for years  we have had smoked bacon home made from a pal who smokes it black its very good My home made sausages fried bread swimming in bottled GD tomatoes at Christmas breakfast the Christmas lunch at 3.00 and watch the Queen.If one is still hungry tea at when ever.THEY don't come until Boxing day.But now is the time to start planning not 22 December I have treated myself to an electric water tap and a dribble hose to water the toms in the greenhouse then if I feel to jaded to water the tap will switch on and the toms will be watered.I am looking forward to see how it works.4 XXXX George and Kath

Nice one Annie, I aim to do that one day. Just got started with hens a week or so ago and they are all now laying almost every day. I already grow some veg and I am looking into getting some more fruit trees to take over more of the garden. Pigs are a big ambition though.
