Our little black patterdale bitch had her first litter of pups thru the early hours, absoloutly gorgeous!!!! 5 dogs and 1 bitch, shes doing fab!

Well done! No complications I hope?  I see they are on straw.  Do be careful they don't get lost and miss out on feeds.  I never use straw for that reason, apart from it being messy in the house.

I didn't think about it causing blindness, but I suppose it is sharp.  I just prefer a nice big pad of soft, white vetbed for my babies

Ours always have them outside so its usually in a straw cardboard box in a stable, too many horses in at the mo so Jazz is in the pallet made weaner pen 
Ive always had them on straw, and my father inlaw always had the hounds on straw beds so i asumed it was ok? iv got some old towels im going to use that should be nice and cozy 
One had died lastnite it seemed to have a cleft pallet  and mum was rejecting it  but all the rest are good and mum is doing really well

I always checedk for cleft palates at birth with my Cockers.  It is in some breeds, not others.  Sometimes they can be repaired if not severe but the pups rarely do so well anyway so I euthanased straight away if found - having said that I've only ever had two in 30 years of breeding dogs.  In that time I have always whelped my bitches in the house, sleeping beside them in case of any problems that could cause loss of both bitch and pups  - as in my last litter - if Belle had been outside I would not have known she was aborting due to a ruptured placenta and would have lost her and the 5 remaining pups.  And also in that time I have never used straw, always vet bed, not even towels as they can be chewed.  But it's what suits you and your bitch that is best for you both at the end of the day.  Hope they aer all well, and you find lovely homes for them - presumably working ones mostly.

I would idealy like to have my bitches in for whelping but living in a caravan with the OH and 2 children we are a little stuck for space  Its a bummer, id like a house cat when we move in to the house, when it gets finished and we finaly get to move in!!!
They are all doing well  and have had a lot of interest in them, hopefully they will all go to working homes, as mum and dad are proving to be excellent workers, and are from super nuttall lines!
Im eagerly waiting for them to open there eyes and start to roam around and get some more pics!
