do goats make nests
« on: April 22, 2010, 12:05:02 pm »
when i let the girls out this morning i was surprised to see made out of the straw
a nest like thing.
it was perfectly made, circular in shape with the hollow middle like it was made for something to be
dropped into!
we are now thinking maybe molly has a phanthom pregancy.
any suggestions, remarks and comments on this will be great ;)
thanks langdon :goat:

Can I ask a question here??  How long have you had Molly?  Is there any possibility she was in kid when you got her - that could explain the making of udders. But surely the vet would have thought of this?  Never seen any of my goats make a nest as such, although they do paw the ground just before kidding.  I think i mentioned somewhere that Harriet thought she had kidded, and kept making bleating noises into the corner, as thought she could "see" something. And then outside, she would run up to buckets, and cats etc.  as though she was thinking they were her missing kid!!  She went ok again after a few days.

the two girls are only 10mths old,
we bought them from a public farm( folly farm) in south wales if you know it.
anyway i seen her doing that paw thing quite alot outside.
why is only one side of the udder filled with milk if she thinks she is pregant.
again thanks for all your help with this, i was getting really worried.

My pygmy which I rescued, kidded at 10 months!!!

Can you take a photo of the swollen udder, so we can see just exactly how swollen it is.  Have you tried milking Molly?  Just  wondered if its milk thats in  there, or water maybe. Just gently see if you can squeeze a few drops out and see if it is milk.

Just checking the obvious has not happened before she came to you, but is sounds like she definitely is not in kid, so that narrows things down a bit.  Try and post a pic though and we will be able to see if we think its swollen or not.
