How many of you are like me?
  I trawl the unread posts daily for something interesting and see a post with a vague title which you know you have read before but can't remember whether is was worth reading or not so open it AGAIN to check   .. only to remember is wasn't worth opening the first time   ( 'disappointing' is a current one .... a good tread but I can never remember what is disappointing till I've opened it!) 

A plead for subjects which give us just a bit more of a  hint of what the tread is about ... or where located in case of wants/sales  would make life easier ...

lol, I think I mostly remember which threads are interesting, but I do get annoyed at an opening post which is just a link to some website or video, with no text/discussion at all.  I am not going to follow a link when I don't know what's at the end of it, and haven't the time, patience or broadband capacity or allowance to randomly watch videos one other person is sure we must all be going to find fascinating/hysterical or whatever.

But when I find myself huffing and puffing and contemplating writing a pithy comment, I usually do as you did, Linda, and decide I need to get a life!  lol.  And am then glad I picked up my knitting, or went for a walk, or whatever

Backinwellies - I'm glad you started this thread. I've been meaning to do the same myself, but I couldn't think what to call it  .

Also, when folks just check for 'unread posts', it's far easier to decide which threads to read if they've got lots of detail in the subject. So, "Call ducks for sale in Auchtermuchty, £15 each" is much more helpful than just "for sale". Likewise "How can I teach my turkeys to breakdance?" is better than "Help with breakdancing", which could just as well apply to goats  .

I should add, that no matter what the title or previous experience of a thread, if certain other TASers, Womble foremost among them, has posted, I shall read the new posts

He's hoping that they are good mimics so he is demonstrating it to them a few times a day in the hope that they copy him    please show us the video [member=2128]Womble[/member] so we can all show it to our poultry

I can see people's point but some people are not as articulate as others, some get to the point and others don't but is the point not that everyone is different and sometimes, just because we know what we meant, we didn't appreciate others didn't.

The trick when posting is to think who your audience is. If it's potential duck buyers in Auchtermuchty then aim your post at them as precisely as possible. OK, you'll get fewer thread views than just "for sale", but you're also more likely to sell your ducks!

In my simple head, people read forum posts for three reasons: 1) they think they might be able to answer your question or  contribute to the discussion, 2) they have the same question themselves 3) general interest in the topic.


There are no prizes for articulation, and even the professionals get it wrong sometimes. However, if people can tell straight away if the criteria above apply to them or not, I reckon you're onto a winner!

I take the general point but let's remember that, at a conservative estimate, 10% of the population has some form of dyslexia, dyspraxia or some other condition that inhibits their ability to easily process information and churn it back out into words again.

I read them anyway because I am a readaholic - if it has words on it, I read it. (Have real problems in public toilets, trying to NOT read the doors.
