cheeky chook...
« on: April 17, 2010, 05:40:43 pm »
we've been plagued by rats recently, so have been working our way around each chicken pen & shed, digging/flooding/smoking out, setting traps, poisoning and blocking off holes.

So there I am crouched (I'm 5'10 ) inside the covered run, digging down in order to lay bricks along the bottom of the shed, with the four hens 'helping' by catching wiggly worms, pecking my fingers and generally getting in the way.
Their access to inside we blocked off because we'd re-boarded and re-tiled the floor where the little rodents have chewed...

I'd made quite a hole, and sent the husband off to fetch some stones and stuff to fill it in.
the hen with the wobbly toe (we only named Gladys, as the others all look the same!) kept climbing in the hole and again and again I lifted her out.

.... you've guessed it, she'd made up her mind that at 3:30pm, in a dirty hole, with her beak resting on my knees, and her henny friends pecking around her for worms,  she was going to lay an egg!

I could even hear it being pushed out!

You lucky thing!  For all that I've had chickens for about 10 years now I have never ever seen any of mine lay an egg!
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age
