nearly given up
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:17:19 pm »
today as i was cleaning out the chuck house i decided to replace the nesting box the perch
and the ladder in which they use to climb up onto the perch with.
as said i am so p****d of with these little creppie crawlies around the place.
as i pulled back the nesting box i seen a few, alive in the powder in which i put down
not so long ago. >:(
i was at one point thinking of just giving up keeping chucks because we just seem to be spending
more money on powders than what the chucks are actually worth :(
we have been using redmite powder, poultry shield and diatom and we are still having these little
so and so in the house.
we do love our chucks and the kids think the world of them and we adore the lush eggs for breakfast mmmmm
so we are going to continue with it there has to be a some form of treatment that works.
we are getting in a new house for our new light sussex chuck soon, only hope we dont have the same problem
with these girls. :chook:

you could try using a blow lamp !!!!
Make sure all the poultry are out of the way ...and go over every part of the shed with the blow lamp. Take special care of doing under all perches and in any hidden nooks and crannies....Make sure you have cleared all bedding out before hand though !!!! and treat everywhere with gallons of Jeyes fluid or similar . When you do the blow lamp bit , make sure you have either a running hose pipe right next to you , or loads of buckets of water , as you are most likely to set fire to a wooden shed somewhere.
If you do it on a very warm/dry day , you can spray the whole interior with something like virkon-s after the lamp instead of the JF  .

You could also try a sulphur bomb/candle ....I don't mean blow the bloody shed up !!! but get a sulphur bomb/candle from the garden centre and light that in the shed and seal it up for 12 hours. You obviously need to keep all animals out of the shed for the whole time , as the sulphur bomb/candle will kill anything in the shed , mites , bugs , insects any creepy crawlies at all.

The blow lamp works well with red mite , if done on a regular basis , 3/4 times a year , it will keep the numbers down to virtually nothing . You could also put sticky fly paper under the perches , if you don't fancy the blow lamp !!! . Just pin it to the underside of the perch ..it does work , I used to do it !!!

Hope that helps ...

cheers

I used to use  a blow lamp all the time and it works ... no small flame when I did it though ..... I wanted the buggers dead , not lightly tanned !!!!
