Breeding Kune Kunes for First Time
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:39:05 am »
Hi

We have two Kune Kune girls and would like to take a litter from them.  What age would you recommend that they are first bred?  AI or rent a boar?

Advice please

You would normally want to get your gilts in pig for the first time at about nine months old.

Can't advise on the AI v boar, but someone will be able to help.

Can you AI kune kunes? Is semen available.  Nearest boar to us is over 200 k away and at 100 euros just for the stud fee plus keep a bit too expensive for what would just be pets for us.  We were given a miniature kune recently, who is showing a lot of interest in the males.  If AI is possible would love the details.

I've been looking into the AI for Kune kunes - doesn't seem to be any around.
I've got a sow that has never come into pig with the current boar (but he's fathered other litters, so he's ok ;)) and this sow has had piglets in the past so I was hoping that maybe a different boar might have the desired effect lol! If anyone does find a source of kune kune semen I'd definately be interested.

looking at ours, I'd say 9 months is a little young for kunes - fine for bigger breeds, but they're not really mature yet.
I imagine you'll struggle to locate AI semen, try the British kune kune society website/forum to look for a nearby chappy for your girls...

and post some photos of them please!!

Thanks for the comments

Completely new to this, so, if 9 months is a little young, what age would you go for?

I wait for my GOS to be at least 11 months before putting with the boar.  Depending on how they are looking.  I imagine about the same time for Kune Kunes too.

i breed Kune kunes and i what until the gilts are about 11 months old no younger but i wouldnt what too long either as it has its problems too. I am almost 100% sure there are no kunes for AI. you could hire a boar. where are you? i am in scotland and have a lovely boar, i also take in visiting sows

Thanks Pink

We are in Lincolnshire so a bit far from you.  We'll have to have a look locally.  Is it worth buying one in?  What sort of stud fee is usually charged?

What are the boars like?  I have read that they can be a bit stroppy!

My boar (although I've only been his owner for a couple of months and can't take the credit ;)) is lovely. He'll 'sit' and beg for treats, loves a cuddle and scratch behind his ears and just generally has a lovely temprament - I think, but could be wrong, that most Kune Kunes are like this, they love human contact. Hubby enjoys going in for a 'play' tussle with him from time to time and has never been hurt. We're kinda lucky, in that he's always got female company to stop him getting 'frustrated' obviously if you were keeping him seperate his attitude may not be so good  ;D But other TASers will be able to tell you if this is the case.
Of all breeds of boar - I think Kune Kunes are probably the least stroppy.

I usually charge about £120 stud fee and about £6 per week keep.
I had been talking to happyhippy and saying that i maybe selling my 2 1/2 yr boar to bring new bloodlines up to scotland. so if you where interested let me know. kune kune boars tend to be very placid and easy going but i would say still treat with respect!
