Its that time of the year again when I wish I had listened to myself and taken heed when I said I would never overwinter pigs again.

:raining:Pigs up to their bellies in liquid mud, they have just trashed the second pen and nowhere else for them to go, they have nice warm arks with loads of straw but insist in digging up the ground, hey ho summers just around the corner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much the same here. It's remained pretty mild but wet, the sun came out briefly the other day and it felt warm - wereupon the gilt that farrowed Sunday before last decided that a good wallow was needed

! I couldn't believe my eyes, there she was laying full length in the wallow which was quite full of rainwater obviously enjoying herself!

. I'm now hoping for some frost to harden the ground up - I never thought I'd be happy to see the cold!

I agree I have a sea of mud at the moment, mine are going to the abbatoir in 4 weeks. This has put me off wanting to over-winter though November is late enough

Won't have piggies here before April or after mid Sept .... which is why so far they haven't happened ... just not got act together yet! though after this Aug..........!!

Got my meat back this afternoon Linda. It looks really good and very low fat.
Off to try to get it into the freezer now

It's getting muddy here too

I'm lucky to have a big shed with concrete floor (it's far from water tight but better than a field

) for my pigs to come in to during winter. For porkers it's not really an issue but I wouldn't want my breeding stock in cold mud (can lead to arthritis). You've got to think about your safety too, especially if you're going into the field to feed/top up bedding - lots of mud and boisterous pigs is an accident waiting to happen
