Spotty is coughing.
« on: April 04, 2010, 08:34:00 pm »
One of our new pigs has a slight cough.  It seems to occur when she has been lying down and then exerts herself.  She was wormed 5-6 weeks ago by the breeder we got them from who has a very good reputation.  Otherwise she is totally OK.  Well thats not strictly true both the pigs have lice which we have been treating with louse powder.  The cough started before the use of the powder.  We are planning to get some Coopers Spot on.

So my question is - should we be concerned yet or at what point should we worry?  Could it be lung worm?  We were thinking of re-worming with Flubenol I think its called.

Any thoughts anyone?

Could also be an infection referred to as "Glasses" which is carried by some pigs and affects piglets badly if not treated with antibiotics.

If in any doubt speak to a vet who knows about pigs.

Thanks

Both pigs are totally happy, eating fine e.t.c. but now have runny noses.  Do you think they just have a cold?  I haven't heard any coughing for a couple of days

Snuffly with a runny nose?  One of ours had a cold, I panicked and got the vet out, who did the usual antibiotics, which I dont like.  He didn't have eryciphilitis (sp?) which was my fear.  He still has a snuffly nose despite the anitbiotics, however is fine in himself and will be back out with the others as soon as his nose is clear.
