Convinced both collie x youngsters are blind
« on: September 28, 2015, 02:09:41 pm »
18 months old. had since pups lovely little creatures.  Lovely dogs been in the cage over the summer months.  Been taking them out to train but they are so dappy, obv cant see, too frightened to jump, cant work out drops.  I have noticed when I stand on the yard they cant see me unless I walk close.  The one walks into me or between my legs. The other gets lost.

I am convinced one is totally blind, the other isnt so bad.  I'll have to take them to the vets but we cant keep two blind working dogs.  Really upset on what is next.  No life for young dogs.  I can only assume they have the collie eye problem which I have read about recently.

How awful. Has their sight been deteriorating gradually or is this a sudden change?

no issues before but without having their eyes checked at regular intervals none the wiser.

The one that I think is blind also is very stiff in the front legs which is strange.

I have tonnes of blind dogs here (well, 7 at todays date :roflanim:) if you need help on solutions, rehoming etc you might contact blind dog rescue Uk, also facebook has a really useful group call blind dogs who may be able to provide assistance.

Blind dogs have full quality of life and I fully understand if these aren't suitable for your lifestyle, please if you haven't done so, do some research relating to their options before you make any decisions

Thanks Kitchen Cottage - need to get full assessment at vets first. Just think its odd the stiffness in legs too.

Now does everyone see why I keep banging on about KC recommended health tests.  :tired:

I'm so sorry you have such problems  :'( :'( , it always comes back to heartache for the owners.

Makes me so angry when these issues can be avoided by judicial and intelligent breeding.

I have a border collie with collie eye. He came from working stock but it became very clear when he was only about 3 months old that he had a problem. He is scared of the dark, can't see anyone who wears dark clothing . i get him checked every year and so far his eyes are no worse. I also think he has a heart problem but vet not so sure. Would need looking into and as being at the vets with him is a total nightmare as he hates strange places and dogs we have not put him through anymore test. He does have a strong working instinct, like to round up the ponies but as the sheep are black he does not bother them at all. It does sound as if your dogs are worse than Rascal though.

How long have you noticed this?  Have you spoken to the breeder?  (obviously vet first).  They're not merles by any chance are they (double merles?)
