Can anyone else see the blue halo round the moon?
« on: September 28, 2015, 12:36:13 am »
Last night and tonight I have been looking at an amazing blue halo around the moon, which makes it look like a giant eye in the night sky, with a silver pupil and bright blue iris.  Apparently it happens when there are ice crystals in the air.  It's very beautiful.

BUT, when I dragged Mr F outside to see it, he genuinely couldn't see it at all, even though I was staring right at it.  We've been married for 44 yrs and 2 days, so I've known him long enough to have known if he was teasing me, which he wasn't. All he can see is a very bright moon.  Our next door neighbour couldn't see it either.

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Has anyone else been able to see it?  I'm really puzzled.

I'm waiting up to see the lunar eclipse if only the clouds stay away, and I'll see what happens to my giant eye then.

You've made me wonder now, earlier tonight I saw what I thought was light cloud in front of it, seemed odd that everytime I looked the cloud was still in front of it, no-where else, didn't notice it was blue though. hope I got some photos of it, but mostly just a big white round thing :-)

I can see a small halo - about 2* the diameter of the moon (been out on badger patrol), presumably because there's a bit of high (ice) cloud - don't really perceive it as blue though.

incidentally, tonight it the night of the supermoon eclipse - supermoon cos it's at the closest point in it's orbit to earth, and the eclipse is supposed to start around 2:30am ish.

A lovely clear night when I went, early to bed. Set my alarm for 1-30 and what happened.........thick cloud!! I got a glimpse of the moon at about 5 this morning, it looked like a 3/4 waning moon but the wrong shape. Will have to wait until I'm 95 now and hope for a clear night!!
I didn't notice a blue ring FW but the moon was beautiful.

I haven't noticed a blue halo. Got out of bed just after 3am last night to see the eclipse. It was a beautiful clear night. Saw the full eclipse but didn't really see much red to be honest  :(

I struggled to see the red too.. You needed to take photo ... photo clearly shows red ... (posted one on my Nantygroes Facebook page. )

I'm afraid I was too tired to stay up/get up at 3am, so missed it. Never mind, I expect it'll be shown on the tv news. A halo round the moon whatever colour is usually a prelude to frost, seen it many times in the past.

For the halo, looks like I'm in a minority of one  :roflanim:  As I see it, there is the small colourless halo you are seeing mab, but then there's a large blue one around that, maybe 5" across, if the moon is 1". I tried photographing it, but the blue part hasn't come out.

I did stay up for the eclipse and was somewhat underwhelmed as I could see no red.  With a bit of imagination there was some smudgy brown.  We had also seen the one in 1988, and that was barely brown either.  I don't suppose I'll be hanging around til the next one.

It's the blue at the bottom of the moon.

Thanks VF but that's not what I saw - which was two nights in a row and not part of the eclipse. It was like a big eye, where the moon was the pupil in the middle, and the blue halo was even bigger than a human iris in proportion.
Your pic is interesting though - I didn't see any blue during the eclipse

I got up at 4.10 and looked out of the window. The eclipse was nearly over but the moon was distinctly red.
