enough room
« on: March 21, 2010, 07:20:31 pm »
once or twice i noticed in the morning when i have been cleaning out the chuch house that
when a chuck goes into the nesting box to lay another decides that she wants to lay is well,
well the problem is that she wants to climb on top of the chuck that sat down first!!!
there is enough room for two chucks at a time to lay, have they choosen an exact spot
in the nesting box, i tried shooing her of the other one but then thought maybe i shouldnt
interfere with nature, bazarre ??? :chook:

If you are sure the box is big enough for two or even three I'd just leave them to it.

They are funny, mine have plenty of nesting space but I often find a couple laying together, I think it is the prefered box rather than anything to do with the chooks cosying up. Hermit

Mine are like that too.  They have 4 laying areas and I quite often find 2 or even 3 sharing the same space, even when all the other spaces are empty.

Chickens, I love them.   :) :) :) :)

Same here my girls have 6 and only use 2. They're ex bats so don't roost well either and have opened the house to find one on top of the other in a corner in the mornings too .. Strange girls but they don't seem to care.

About a year ago, one of our older brown hybrids passed away during the night in the nesting box.  I thought she was in an awful funny position for a newly deceased hen until I discovered a warmish egg beside her.  I suspect one of the others got in on top of her to lay an egg as this was the nesting box of choice.  Sad though I was at the loss of one of my beloved flock, I couldn't help but smile.  :D
