Important question.
« on: September 02, 2015, 03:05:58 pm »
I am wanting to buy in some Welsummers, ideally they must lay a nice coloured redishy/brown egg, they have to be from good laying stock. Does anyone know where I can find breeders of this calibre in mid wales?
Many thanks

You could contact the breed society for local breeders though just how local to you they will be......?

I was hoping within about an hrs drive? I have emailed a few breeders and they have all said no apart from one who hasn't gotten back to me yet.

But is that just a time of year thing Water B? If you waited till next spring would they have some? Or could they sell you some eggs? I know some breeders would say its a bit late but but I have 3 broodies who think otherwise....... ???

I do WS and my hatch from last autumn are laying nice dark eggs but I won't be selling from them until next spring as I like them to moult first and get a bigger egg (=more females). My current hens are still laying but are 3-5 years old and have lost egg colour but all my hatches this year have been 75/25 female./male. The pullets produced lay lovely dark eggs.

Happy to help next year if you need any eggs posting.

Thanks stereo, but I don't have the equipment for hatching any eggs atm, maybe in a few years time. :) I think it may be a bit late, maybe I'll go to a sale and get some commercial hens or stuff from there, am just very wary of of buying from sales as you don't really know what you're getting. :( Could anyone suggest any other breeds, which lay a lot of eggs apart from RIR? I was thinking of buying more Sussex hens, as I have always done very well with them. I think I prefer buff Sussex the best, as the last two were awesome. The thing is I really need the eggs from here to the end of this summer, I don't mind carrying them over the winter.

Sussex are good layers. Leghorns are good if a little flighty.

Have you tried Kevin Bowkett in Herefordshire?

Too far for me to travel. I have contacted all the listed breeders in wales and there are none, as its the wrong time of year. I have decided to go for light sussex and have found a seller who has pol, so hopefully if I can sell these faverolles I can buy them. A lot of people are put off by £20 each or all 6 for £100, is that too much for laying faverolles, from show stock?

I bought them off a good breeder in north wales and his stock were very healthy. My birds are beautiful they look a lot like fluffy owls.
