CPH and Kune kunes
« on: September 01, 2015, 03:00:41 pm »
hi there
just need some advice

i have an half acre garden, with 1/4 split off that my chickens free range, this is well away from neighbours and we back out onto a wood,

im wondering if it is easy enough to get a CPH number for the garden?

also i would lke 2 kune kunes, not for pets!!!
would this be enough room ,there is plenty of grass and would be fed pig suppliment, fruit and veg and hay come winter

many thanks any info would be taken on board plus i am in the process of negotiating some land but if fails would hopefully get the graden

Is the 1/4 for chickens a quarter of the half acre or a 1/4 acre?

My pigs and chickens mix happily and don't need splitting up or fencing separately, just the hen house needs protection from piggy egg robbers!

Ring your local animal health for a CPH number, they will issue it.

Only ever kept one Kune, so can't comment on space as my Large Whites have very different requirements, but be careful you keep your pigs smelling fresh (poo picking regularly). As well as looking after the land, pigs kept too near neighbours can upset them being noisy at meal times and they are well within their rights to complain about smell if you keep your pigs within a certain distance of their house.

RPA will issue you with a CPH number and Animal Health (APHA) will give you a herd number.

If you've ever seen the space a commercial indoor pig unit is required you wouldn't have concerns about space, although I would run the chickens and pigs together and let them have the full site, just fence around the hen house so it doesn't get emptied by the piggies.

You also want to ideally be able to rest the land for 6 months between batches of pigs.

No need to clean them out as such, they are very clean animals generally. I top up the bedding every couple of weeks or more often in winter but once they have decided where their toilet is going to be thats it, and the chickens will love raking that over!

If you need help persuading your wife to keep pigs just visit someone with pigs. They are great and I'm sure having fussed a few she will be as keen as you are.

We've got old spots in Derbyshire if thats local but otherwise I'm sure there will be someone nearby?

Thanks again
We are looking to keep kune kunes to start with as they will be a manageable size
I was thinking of picking the poo up and composting it
If that's allowed?

If you want to you can pick it up, just have to get there before the chickens.

It very much depends on the pigs you get......some Kunekune are very small and even at a year aren't close to the traditional slaughter weight of 80kg live weight. Some (like mine) are bigger in size so by a year old are all ready to go.
I don't think I've got any photos that would give a good idea of size unfortunately... But they'll be around knee high and about 3ft long if that helps?
Where are you? I can direct you to breeders who breed for meat and tend to have bigger pigs

I have no idea about kune kunes but I would be wary about pigs in the same pen as hens.  Our pigs find much fun in chasing pheasants and if they ever caught one I wouldn't expect to find many feathers left!
