Ewe loosing weight after weaning
« on: August 19, 2015, 10:43:52 am »
I have a four year old ewe who had twins this year and since we have removed the lambs fro her she has lost weight. She was fine previous years after lambing. She has been wormed on lush grass along with other ewes but still is not putting weight on. We have tried giving hard feed but she seems to be unitrested in this only taking a few mouthfuls. I  am going to try some liquid life aid to give her a boost and some antibiotics just in case  Any other suggestions welcome

Bring hervin Give her a quiet companion, pick her some ivy and other browse, give her multi vit drench, is she calling for them. At all, what's her bag like, is it normal drying up or is she full.  Could put energy lick in with her.

Have you had a FEC done?  Could be worms or fluke.  Also check her temperature, and give her a good overall inspection to see if you can see any wounds or infection etc.

You need the vet before she goes to far , are her gums pink (normal ) or grey ( anaemic )      could be  Fluke   Teeth ( front and back )     infection   pneumonia      MV         and so on

Why antibiotics? If shes grazing and not got mastitis there are very very few diseases on the long list that she may have that would benefit in anyway from antibiotics. There are no new antibiotics in the pipeline so we need to use those we have responsibly.
If the rest of her peer group are gaining weight and she's loosing then either vet visit, or cull asap, or depending on your risk level a short withdrawal flukicide  then cull if no response.
