when you dont have a tractor...
« on: August 07, 2015, 12:22:11 pm »
Hi all.
I've worked on other people farms all my life. Big farms with everything you need. But I've finally taken the plunge and got my own bit of heaven (well an overgrown ex pony paddock).

I'm wanting to get ewes on but realizing how much I rely on state of art equipment in my day job.
I don't have a tractor, but want to top the field. Does anyone know of a topper which can be pulled behind a 4x4 (isuzu trooper)??
And likewise but thinking further ahead, a chain harrow for a 4x4?
Cheers.

Plenty of ATV mowers (rotary or flail) available that can be towed behind quad or 4x4.  Google "ATV mower".  Brands off the top of my head - Logic, Quad-X, Wessex, Chapman, etc.  Ditto for chain harrow.

Alternatively, use smaller paddock sizes so that you never need to top. :)

I think if I stocked for that in the summer I'd be knee deep in mud by winter Foobar.  Is there something I'm missing though?

Yes ... have enough land to graze all winter, but shut some of it up for summer and get someone else (with all the gear) to take a hay or silage crop off it. :)
