Why Bulgaria?
« on: July 07, 2015, 06:24:35 pm »
For those wondering why I, and many others, move to Bulgaria of all places, it all starts with finding out you can buy a smallholding for a tiny fraction of one in the UK. Other considerations are a bonus, like running costs, driving costs, vet costs (negligsble) and stunningly beautifulcountryside...though not necessarily looked after. Then there are the long, hot summers, short, cold winters, proper spring and autumn. Yes, there are down sides. Animl welfare, corruption, lack of police support are a few. Below is a link to a smallholding not far from us, a dream when we were younger, but far too much work at our ages. The couple who lived here were well on the way to total self sufficiency before bad luck kicked in and now they are having trouble selling. There are many such properties for sale though not all have been renovated by the in-house builder,

I looked at places in Bulgaria as well as France when I was looking for a smallholding, but it was the language barrier that worried me, which is why we ended up coming over to Ireland.
How do you manage with the language?
How many acres how much light
Tucked in the woods and out of sight
Talk to the neighbours and tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map

I keep wanting to ask Womble what his Uncle's been up to  :roflanim:
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

He's too busy remembering when he wasn't behind the times to do any smallholding I'm afraid  ;).

Lots of charades and laughing at first, There are usually Brits or other English speakers you can ask advice from initially, but most in comers are 'adopted' by a villager who usually has a relative who has a bit of English. There are also interperaters who will go with you for official form filling and registering. Although the internet in Bulgaria is advanced and they are at no 5 in the world, they still love paper forms...and lots of them though your details are all on line.
