Very strange
« on: March 04, 2010, 11:19:31 am »
This morning when I went out to feed the goats, on the step by the door was what looked like a dog lead.  It had a clip at each end, a very solid piece in the middle, and a loop that you would put over a dogs head.  It was not there last night, and whats even more puzzling, its not one of our leads.  I showed it to my hubby, and he said he had never seen it before either.

So, how had it  got there?  My first thought was someone was trying to steal the goats.  In that barn is Bobby, the pygmy billy, Molly and her kid, and Charlie, last years kid.  I have heard of pygmy goats being stolen and sold on.  But, unless you know the goats are there, its not as if you can see them from a road or anything, and its quite a walk up the track to get them to a  vehicle.  Twyford, one of the outside dogs is in the haybarn next door all night, and I am sure he would have barked if he heard anything.  To be honest, when he does bark its usually foxes fighting outside his door.

The nearest footpath that anyone walking a dog would be, is right down the field, so cannot really see anyone mislaying the lead right there outside the door ........

As you say Roxy, very strange. I have heard numerous stories about Pygmy goats being stolen - although it has almost always just been the kids that went. I guess you just need to be extra vigilant for a while, let's hope there will be no more unexplained events.

Although I work three days a week, I am around mostly all other times in the daytime.  Apparantly, a lot of thieves operate in the daytime, when people are at work!!  Really, you could carry the pygmy kid off under your arm, and probably Charlie the little female......you certainly would struggle to carry Bobby anywhere, he is as wide as he is high.  I think the little one would kick a rumpus up if a stranger too hold of him - he is quite vocal!!!

I had intended to have electric gates at the end of the farm track, had we been staying.  I do worry about my livestock getting out onto the lane, and this would give me peace of mind having a locked gate.

There may be a perfectly acceptable explanation for the dog lead, but at the moment I cannot think of one.  I wish I could, to stop me worrying and thinking all sorts!!!!

Does not surprise me that things get stolen from sheds when you are around. I walked into my turkey shed and found a chinese man from a takeaway night they were having at the local hall actually sitting on one of my turkeys with his hands round her neck! HERMIT

It was quite frightening really cause when my mind had got round what I was actually seeing he was stood in the doorway blocking the door out and would not leave! even after me ordering him out 1o times. In the end I went out into the paddock and waited for him to go hoping he did not do anything to the goats and turkeys I had to leave him with! When he went I had a count up and then went to get my husband who was also at home.By then it had really sunk in what happenend and I went ballistic, I got to him before my OH and shall we just say Hell Hath No Fury......... I did not call the police as that is not how things like that are dealt with..You just tell everyone and let them get a bad reputation for it, stealing is the worst thing you can do up here, you are the lowest thing on the planet if you steal from anyone. The poor turkey died a couple of weeks later, dont know if it was anything to do with it but seems strange. Anyway shed doors are padlocked now and only opened by me and OH. I was offered free meals by one of his bosses but dont fancy somehow.  Hermit

But surely they'd need the lead to take the goat away again?

No I am calmed down now thanks G. Still on my guard though. Yes Sagehen there are lots of takeaways in Lerwick and Scalloway. Must be all those fishermen. We even have Turkish and Nepalese. We get boats in from all over the world, Shetland is like a motorway service station in the North Sea  I guess. Quite a busy spot really. We also get lots of immigrant workers and taxi drivers ;) just like anywhere else. Not racist, they all work hard. Hermit

Wow, didn't know that  ;D Wonder what they make of all the natives wearing Fair Isle jumpers  ;D Sorry, couldn't resist! It'd be funny if there was a Chinese takeaway on Muckle Flugga (what, no, we don't do deliveries  ;D)
