distance from house or neighbours
« on: February 26, 2010, 01:23:16 pm »
A work colleague has asked me this, i don't have the answer, can anybody help??

How far away do chickens have to be from the house or your neighbours house? Her neighbour has just got some chickens and they are very close to her fence/house.

it's her garden, she can put anything she wants in there unless there is a covenant on the house saying that certain animals can't be kept. This will be in the deeds but is usually an issue for the Local Authority who are unlikely to enforce it

Politeness and respect for your neighbours garden is whats called for.(presuming the deeds allow her to keep chooks). Tell your friend to ask your neighbour what she minds! She might not want to have a barbeque and sit out next to a chicken run and arguments will ensue. She would probably have no issue with them away from her fence a bit. After all she may have to be asked to look after them at holiday time etc. Keep neighbours sweet. Shetland paul was right about the rodent issue aswell, also think of all those starlings and their poo all over your neighbours washing! If she is going to keep garden chooks it all has to be taken into consideration not trying to put you off. Feeding the chooks in the hut is the best way of keeping wild birds away. Hermit

until they learn were it is. then you get starling poo all over everything. at least the poor starlings are thriving in shetland.

I think it's 1 metre away from the boundary (fence/hedge or whatever). Doesn't she like the chickens being near?
