Van broken down.....again.
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:16:44 pm »
Whilst coming home tonight from visiting my Mum, the van started making a very strange noise.  Its been in the garage twice, and they could find nothing wrong, except to say it was low on oil.  Anyway, Rick decided not to drive it any further, in case it made things worse.  We were about two miles from home, and although its along dark lanes, we are not bothered about walking.  only thing was, my mum, as usual, had piled us up with food etc, and I had the goats feed, plus all my eggs I had collected today, and the usual stuff I carry about daily.  So, we would have been well laden had we walked.

Ricks mate lives two minutes from where we broke down.  Rick rang him, and we limped the van there.  He is a mechanic, and having looked at the engine, and listened to it, declared it would be sensible to not drive it home.  Can we have a lift then?  Phil said there might be a  slight problem in that because this afternoon they were out in his wifes car, and it broke down and they had to be recovered home.  He has never, ever had to call out the breakdown services before.  His own 4x4 he could not use to give us a lift, as he had been out in that last night and used all his fuel. He had just enough to get to work in the morning.  His teenage sons car is off the road.   But he then had a flash of inspiration, and said if his teenage daughter had fuel in her little car, he would take us home in that.  Success, it had fuel!!

So, we all piled in the little saxo, with the shopping, my eggs, the goat feed, etc......Phil was a saviour!!

Thank goodness it did not happen earlier, we had been to the tip with a van full of rubbish.  I am not sure the saxo would have been quite big enough to put the sacks of rubbish in!!

Just hope its not off the road too long.  We have the old Range Rover, but it sups fuel, as we do not use it unless we have to.

I know all about van troubles :)  I have had a right collection of van's over the years. I was contracting in Germany & decided I would drive over myself this one time because I had extra tools to take over. I had the van that I would be driving over in about 7 months & never had a problem with it. So naturally thought it would be ok.  I lived in Oldham at the time & set off with a van load of tools. Got all the way to Dover without a problem. Then as I was driving onto the ferry there was a bang & steam bellowed out from the front of the van. I was halfway down the ramp & the engine had blown up & it would not move. Was a nightmare, because of how far on the ferry I was it had to be pushed on & I had to go to France & back before I could get it off again.
Ended up having to scrap it & buy another that weekend. It was a good job I was earning good money at the time. Was an expensive week
Live for today. Tomorrow never comes

We've always had vans as well, but the Ford transit (before our Toyota) gave us the most trouble. There was a problem with the dif gear, and the back axle was meant to be repaired, but we were driving in the van one day when there was a loud bang, and my husband looked out the window to see the back axle going past him in leaps and bounds  ;D That was it, stranded on the lay by for half a day, waiting for the recovery guys!  :-\

I've only had this happen once in 55 years of driving and Miri .It was a 109" Land Rover.Pulled up at Walesby X roads because of the cross traffic Let the clutch out to join when the road was clear. BANG and didn't move sh1t in a big way Bang the Yellow Knob down and drive away when I got home investigation revealed an off side rear axle shaft was in two pieces.Thank goodness for the Yellow knob.I don't know what happens in Su if she breaks a half shaft Does she know and drive the other axle because she is AWD but no Yellow knob.I'll make a few enquirers.I always check the oil and water before I go far and every Saturday anyway. Its quite surprising where coolant goes with no leaks. So I once put a 2ltr bottle on the overflow pipe and made sure it was only just in so it would not suck any coolant back into the system as the engine cooled Nothing happened for a good while then one Saturday the radiator was very low I could see the tubes I looked in the 2ltr bottle and it was more than half full. Why I have never found out.The pressure release cap spring must jam or something.I replaced it with a new one and never had it happen again ;D :farmer:
