Bl%%*? Brigitte
« on: April 14, 2015, 05:56:37 pm »
Mauna Loa, one of our two first time lambers this year, produced her single lamb this afternoon.  We went out seconds after it was born, to find Bleeping Brigitte stealing the lamb, shoving Mauna out of the way, and all the usual thieving things she got up to once before.  Mauna ran away, two fields away, milling around with the rest of the ewes, but not wanting her lamb any more. Lamb was looking the worse for wear so I took her indoors and gave her a little colostrum - not a whole dose as I wanted her to be perky enough to still feed from Mauna if we could catch her.  Meanwhile Brigitte was bawling her head off for 'her' lamb and charging around from field to field - mayhem.
How to catch Mauna Loa?  We ended up having to round up the whole flock of heavily pregnant ewes, far from ideal, but Mauna was way too spooked by then to be catchable any other way.
Mum and lambie are now in the pen in the polytunnel we keep made up for just such eventualities.  At first Mauna had a go at butting daughter, and me, and the drinker and anything else she set eyes on, but slowly she has settled down and is now washing the lamb and purring at her.  Lambie meanwhile is doing her best to get to the dairy, but last I saw Mauna was hopping away every time she approached the back end.  We've left them to it so they can work at mothering up in peace.
Meanwhile Bleeping Brigitte is in disgrace and has been put in with the ancient biddies, just in case someone else lambs and she tries to steal those too.  I expect her to lamb within a few hours, as that was the reason for her previous lamb theft attempt.
We're knackered now.....sheep, who'd have 'em  :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep:

I know   Just went to tunnel to check Mauna Loa and daughter - lambie is fat and burping and bouncing around  :yippee:  :hugsheep:

Not a sign from Bleeping Brigitte, so I think she was just being baaad.  She hasn't had her own lamb for a couple of years, so maybe she's just over keen.  I'll have forgiven her by the morning  :sheep:

I had a ewe this year that even with her own five week old twin lambs has tried to steal newborns.

Hi - I was just wondering did 'Bleeping Brigitte' get her own lamb in the end and how is she doing?  She made me smile so much on a bad lamb day.

Thank you Katrina  :)  Yes, bleeping Brigitte did eventually get her own lamb, about 4 or 5 days later.  Single tup lamb who unfortunately is destined for the meat queue, but she loves him dearly.  We had put her in with the non-lambing old dears after her hijacking attempt, so they made a great fuss of her when she had the lamb.  Now they're all in together again.  Briggie is an excellent mum, but the little lad is one of those who wanders off to sleep in an obscure corner, or to play with his mates, so she has been spending a lot of time charging around baaing madly, trying to find him.  You wouldn't think a 15 y.o. could run so fast  ;D

No  8).  We also have a 19 y.o. ewe, not bred her since she was 15 or 16 though, when she had twins. Hebbies are long lived  :hugsheep:.

Loved the story of Brigitte. We had a Blackface who lived till she was nearly 20. We didn't breed from her after about 15 but she always threw lovely lambs and was a real old pet.
