A week to go. . .
« on: April 03, 2015, 11:00:16 pm »
Thought this might be of interest to someone. We are a week off lambing, and i'm itching to get started (or rather for the ewes to), although at the same time a wee bit nervous with the weather.

The girls are looking fit to burst, we scanned mostly twins with the flock aged ewes, with a small handful or singles and triplets. To my surprise, nearly all of the ewe lambs scanned in lamb, although luckily mostly singles.

They are back home now, and will go into the lambing paddocks by Monday / Tuesday, and then it's just a case of watching and waiting and hoping it all goes to plan! They have had no hard feed, and only a couple of bales of hay over winter, although the young uns have had a life line bucket for the last couple of weeks.

Am using all new rams this time, so will be interesting to see the results. The older ewes ran with a maternal tup and the ewe lambs with a pair of ME's Charmoise, with the maternal tup as a sweeper.

Fingers crossed all round! Problems will probably start in the next few days!

Thanks.

That farm has been shut up since the back end of last year for lambing, so i've had a head start grass wise.

The ewes have been away on dairy keep over winter.

:fc: for the hoggs. There are only 20 lambing this time, so hopefully not too many problems. We shall see.

We run a similar system, on dairy ground over winter and no corn just buckets as they get close to. We are nearing the end of the 350 ewes and got 45 lambs due end of the month. We have had some real big lamsbs so not looking forward to ewe lambs as most scanned for singles. We had a couple of days of horrendous weather and lost a few lambs to it but otherwise had a fantastic lambing and won't be Corning or lambing inside again!
 :fc: your goes well
