Hi all,

I have been breeding and raising Berkshires for 2 years now. We have had problems with the weather as has everyone over the past few months. Due to this we have been left with some boys that should have gone for meat about 5 weeks ago. Their weight is not to bad at the moment but I can't get the last lot away for another 5 weeks.

This will mean that they are going to be 32-33 weeks old. Has anyone had any experience with raising boys to this age and have they had problems with boar taint? Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Hello

They should be fine we take our OSBs and TAMS to slaughter at 11 months;with no taint;but we do ensure they have been well away from any of our female stock.

Our Tammies are usually 32-34 weeks uncastrated boars and we've never had a problem. We have no females though.

You should be all right. Boar taint is very rare, but - as suggested by Gavo - keep the lads away from any females as a precaution.
