Recommendation for vet book for sheep
« on: February 02, 2015, 02:39:49 pm »
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good veterinary type book for sheep farmers/smallholders?  Preferably not too complex!

Thanks

I have a copy of "1001 interesting ways for your sheep to die" by David Henderson.

It was published in 1990 though, and quite a lot of things have changed since then, such as the advice on foot trimming and wormer resistance.

I take it you need something more in depth than Tim Tyne's book (which is unbelievably superbly excellent)?

About time they updated David Henderson's book, I think.  I met him when the Moredun Institute did their Atumn lecture tour of the UK a few years back.  Photos can be a bit scary but most folks will never see most of the problems in there (I hope!)

That's the problem with medical / veterinary books - scare the s**t out of you and the chances of you experiencing most of the conditions are pretty rare  ;D

It's quite pricey from UK sellers, but check out AbeBooks for US sellers:

Might have to wait a bit longer for it but it's a lot cheaper.

You could try Abeboooks.co.uk, but it seems quite pricey. I think I ordered mine directly from the publisher, when it came out originally. Not sure you can do that anymore though. Worth a try - II think it was Goodlife Press?

Agnes Winter & Judith Charmley - the sheep keepers veterinary handbook. More useful than Tim tyne's book or the big blue book.

Thanks all.  I have Tim Tyne's book and love it, it's currently on Home Farmer website for £20 (checked today).  They are having a big book sale so worth a look.

I've got Tim Henderson's book but its just not my sort of book.

I swear by a much friendlier and more pictures book by Agnes Winter and Claire Phythian - both vets and first published in 2011.  Its called Sheep Health, Husbandry and Disease - a photographic guide

I hadn't seen this - looks quite good!

I think the Henderson book is just a wee bit outdated by now...

David Henderson's book is excellent, but as you say, could do with updating. The advice re worming will also be dated.

Tim's book isn't a vet book - he tried to focus on keeping sheep alive rather than looking at all the things they can die from!

There is another totally brilliant books - Flock Health Planning by Neil Sargisson, but it is dear and is probably a bit more technical that you are looking for.

I heard Neil Sargison gave a talk at the Dick Vet school a couple of years back on goat health, and he was brilliant! BUT.... haven't got 65quid for a book right now...  :(
