Murder in the poultry run
« on: December 23, 2014, 08:54:38 pm »
Who killed Warsi, my Rhode Island maran cross. My partner found her yesterday drowned in the pond. She thought the very strong wind might have blown her in. I suspect the call duck drake, or even the Embden gander, of dragging her in to the water to be intimate with her. Today the number of eggs had not decreased, my partner now thinks she had an existential crisis and topped herself. Any suggestions?

So is it ok to kill the drake? Or should we try to rehabilitate him?

if it happens again after you eat the drake, then you'll know it was the gander.
I expect it is from mating rather than fighting, as waterfowl mate in water. can you separate the different species?
have you noticed which birds are active?  :eyelashes:
we ate our drake and he was delicious.  :yum:

Can't eat the beggar I have been vegetarian nearly 50 years. But acknowledging your advice I have switched him and his missus to a different run where he won't be able to act out his fantasies with non-consenting chickens.

However, could use a couple more call ducks ( not drakes) to pander to his appetite. Anyone near Bedford got spares? Happy to pay for them
