Gday - Long time - Saw this on the BBC
« on: January 05, 2010, 08:05:50 am »
Hello all!

Not been here for a while, dealing with the constant sh*t stream that currently appears to be my life!

Just read this on the Beeb website - whatcha think?

The Tories say they plan to introduce a new supermarket ombudsman to support the interests of farmers against abuses of power by large food retailers.
The ombudsman would settle disputes between retailers and suppliers.
The Tories will announce the idea at the Oxford Farming Conference, as they call for a "new age of agriculture".
Labour is due to launch its own food strategy, with ideas such as "meat free" Mondays, more allotments and a bid to cut waste and reduce emissions.
'Unsustainable'
In a speech to the conference, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn will point out that methane produced by ruminant livestock accounts for 4% of the UK's total carbon emissions.
He will urge farmers and food producers to do more to reduce their carbon footprint while urging consumers to be more aware of how food is produced and its environmental impact.
In its updated food strategy, the government acknowledges calls by some campaigners for people to eat less red meat to protect the environment but says the evidence needed to back this up and to provide appropriate advice to consumers is "currently unclear".
Mr Benn will also pledge to do more to combat obesity, suggesting smaller portions of high-fat food.
He also wants to make it easier for people to lease land to grow their own vegetables as way of reducing the long waiting list for city-centre allotments.

It is not enough to talk loosely about a fair market or the need for better labelling
Shadow environment spokesman Nick Herbert
Addressing the same event, shadow environment spokesman Nick Herbert will say the voluntary code of practice governing the relationship between supermarkets and food suppliers is not "worth the paper it is written on" unless properly enforced.
"It is not enough to talk loosely about a fair market or the need for better labelling," he will say.
"We need action, with a supermarket ombudsman and legislation to enforce honest labelling if the retailers won't act."
Following a long-running inquiry, the competition authorities concluded in 2007 that the supermarket industry was operating in the public interest and leading retailers such as Tesco were not overly dominant.
But they called for an ombudsman to resolve disputes and ensure retailers did not exploit relationships with suppliers to push through unfair or retrospective contractual agreements.
"Failure to do so could result in reduced investment by suppliers, lower product quality and less product choice, with potentially higher prices in the long run," Mr Herbert will add.

Hello and welcome back  ;D Sorry to hear things haven't been great for you lately, let's hope the new year will be a fresh start  ;)
As for the story  ::) IMHO if the government REALLY wanted to do something they would have just gone ahead and done it (like they do with everything else >:() They could ban msg from food, thus stopping people from over eating, they could reduce (or even ban) cheap crappy meat imports from abroad which would do far more to support our farmers than another 'organisation' would. The truth is it's all just trying to win votes and line their pockets in the process. The UK government have allowed (some may even say encouraged) us to become a fatter, more complient and more easily managed population and now they're trying to do something about it - too little, too late me thinks  :(
But maybe that's just my cynical side coming out cause I've not had my cup of tea yet ! Sorry for the rant  ;D

Nope - I totally agree with you. Its all smoke and mirrors. Instead of saying we will do this, we will do that - take a stand and say we are doing this, brainless townie chavs may not like it, but those with some greycells will realise its not for us, its for our children.

Right, must dash - just noticed Kebab one of our more retarded chickens is stuck in the cat flap again....... :chook:

I hear a teeny snippet of the Jeremy Vine show that was discussing this topic.  The person representing retail basically said that the supermarkets were the farmers friends and to say that the giant supermarkets squeeze and bully the little farmers in totally innaccurate!!!!!  Am I living in a parallell universe to this guy?

We all secretly love Tescos  ::)

Our local Asda has a local section. Its one shelf about 3ft wide and stocks some mass produced chutney and Belvoir cordials - made at the Duke of Rutlands estate (hardly local struggling farmer - the guy owns most of Leics and the Peaks!!!)

In Home Farmer last month they suggested 52 meals to save the planet- meaning your grow, forage or kill one meal a week.  How many of us already do that? But can you imagine telling that to the retards. OK - instead of buying Tesco super cheap, tasteless imported crap you have to grow some veg.

I think the biggest problem is that we are a minority. If everyone in the world changed to 40 watt lightbulbs the change would be massive. But try getting people to do it. "Oh what difference will it make? / I will do it if someone else does it first / Why should I have to change the way I live? / etc / etc

God, I am depressing myself!!!!  Off to my therapy session with Dr Johnny Walker............
