Aga wick
« on: November 11, 2014, 09:43:56 am »
Has anyone on here replaced an Aga wick on an Aga converted from solid fuel?
My problem is that I cannot lift the drum/heat plate from the Aga so I need to access from below, through thte hatch.
Is there a knack to lifting the rings and holding these out of the way while faffing with the burner? ???

brrrrr!

I am no help at all, I get the wee chappie from Thermaheat to come and do it, I am too scared to fiddle about with my Aga, it is VERY temperamental.

I wouldn't have an Aga. A Rayburn every time for me! Much less temperamental, in fact very easy going.

Thanks for the replies, but I have an Aga, not a Rayburn. Unfortunately I can't afford to  pay the wee chappie to come and look at it. It died in March, I have been cooking on a camping stove, but it's getting cold now. I did try to do it before but don't seem to be able to do it one handed. I will keep trying as I have some oil left in the tank. Once the il is gone I will need to rehome the Aga :-(

I've only serviced an oil Aga not a converted one. There are some videos on Youtube if you Google for them. There is a specific Aga forum here

Hubby did one of these recently and here's how he said he did it.....

Lift the round centre thing up then pull all the pot things out, turn off fuel, disconnect pipe at the bottom and slide the unit out of the bottom door.
Clean all the carbon out of the burner and double check the feed pipe is clear. You also need to cut little v's in the wick on the bottom side.
When you reassemble make sure the burner is spot on level both ways.

Means nothing to me but hope it helps. If your stuck pm me and I'll give you a number so he can talk you through it.

It's really quite easy as long as you are methodical.
Search youtube for a tutorial.
I do mine 3 monthly and takes 20 minutes tops.

Thank Guys! The videos are great and it really helps to know what I am aiming for, but with this conversion, the burner/rings do not fit through the hatch so they cannot be removed this way. The only way we have removed it previously is by lifting out the heat plate/drum. Based on Sbom's comment though, it sounds as though it should be possible if I can disassemble it first then just pull the burner out. I will try again at the weekend.

On the Rayburn once the top plate (very heavy ) is lifted off, all the rings can be pulled out. just remember the order. then it will need the short oil feed pipe taking right off and a small bottle-brush poking through it as they do coke up badly. it pays to replace any of the sealing rope round the pot as they do get very brittle over time.
