Always an interesting topic this! Too many factors involved to give an accurate answer.
When I started with sheep a few years ago I had the same dilemma.My approach was to start in the first year with half the flock I estimated and see how the land coped and increase year upon year until I was comfortable my grassland was coping (allowing for a bad winter).
This may seem a long winded approach but Paid dividends in the long run with not overstocking.
If you fancy something a little different with your sheep by all accounts crossing the north country cheviot with a Cotswold ram makes a good Lamb!!
